A brush is a tool that directly affects the quality and expressiveness of an artist’s work. Different brushes are suitable for different techniques, paint types, and artistic goals.

Types of Brushes and Their Uses

Bristle Brushes

  • Stiff and resilient, hold paint well.

  • Ideal for acrylic or oil painting.

  • Used for expressive strokes, texture, and working with thick layers of paint.

Smooth Brushes (synthetic or natural)

  • Soft and even, allow for smooth transitions and fine details.

  • Perfect for transparent layers and careful work on small elements.

Wide Brushes

  • Used for large surfaces, backgrounds, and filling big areas of color.

  • Help apply paint quickly and evenly, useful for finding shapes of trees, mountains, skies, and smooth transitions, while preserving the texture.

Narrow Brushes

  • Suitable for details, outlines, fine lines, and small elements.

  • Allow precise control over each stroke, even on small paintings.

Balance and Professionalism

Choosing the right brush is a balance between the task and the effect you want to achieve. The correct brush allows you to convey texture, expressive strokes, and the character of the painting. In my work, I combine different brushes to make every detail as vibrant and rich as possible.

In the Path to the Sea video masterclass, you can see how different brush approaches are applied at various stages of painting — from wide strokes for backgrounds to narrow brushes for details and fine work. This is a perfect example of how to combine techniques and brushes to create a lively and expressive painting.
